For some it is the tragic loss of a child. For others, after a life together with a spouse, they bury their own desire to live with the loved one who stood by them for a lifetime “in sickness and in health.” I saw this particular example in my father when mom – who had just started chemotherapy to fight cancer and was in a fighting spirit – died suddenly one Sunday morning. Dad’s will to live went to the grave with the love of his life; he succumbed to cancer seven months later.

I am beginning this chapter while the people of Nepal mourn the loss of thousands and begin the slow work of rebuilding their lives after a tragic earthquake.

This is the place where we wonder: “Has God forgotten me?”
